Nothing Personal assembled historical and contemporary images by leading American photographers and artists. Central to the exhibition was the publication Nothing Personal, a seminal collaboration between photographer Richard Avedon and writer James Baldwin. First published in 1964, a year after the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the book presented a compelling and disturbing portrait of the United States of America, 'the heart, mind and soul of a troubled nation'. As relevant now as it was forty years ago, Avedon and Baldwin's project provokes questions about the state of the American nation and about the USA's current role on the world stage.

Exhibited with Avedon's disturbing and moving photographs were Walker Evans’ haunting images of neglected plantation houses in the Deep South, William Eggleston’s elegiac colour photographs of Elvis Presley’s Graceland mansion, Andy Warhol’s silkscreen prints from the Electric Chair series, Richard Misrach’s monumental Desert Cantos and Paul Fusco’s moving RFK Funeral Train photographs.
